How to Summarize Exit Interviews

Exit interviews provide a valuable opportunity to gather honest feedback from departing employees. These insights can highlight areas of improvement within the organization and enhance employee retention strategies. Keeping thorough and structured notes ensures that critical information is captured accurately and can be analyzed effectively. Additionally, these records help in identifying patterns or trends that might require management's attention.

But what should you include in your meeting notes? We have compiled a list of key points to include in your meeting notes.

  • Meeting Identification:Who were the participants in the exit interview and what was the date of the meeting?
  • Reason for Leaving:What primary reasons did the employee provide for their decision to leave the company?
  • Job Satisfaction:How did the employee describe their overall job satisfaction and work environment during their tenure?
  • Management Feedback:What feedback did the employee offer regarding management and leadership within their department or team?
  • Career Development Opportunities:Did the employee feel there were adequate opportunities for career advancement and professional development? If not, what improvements could be made?
  • Workplace Culture and Environment:What comments did the employee make about workplace culture, morale, or company values?
